Will I Have Visible Scarring After Undergoing Facelift Surgery?

Facelift surgery can provide people with transformative, rejuvenating results. With such a popular, refreshing procedure, it’s normal to feel concerned about the possibility of scarring. While some scarring from incisions is natural and expected, there are many ways to minimize the appearance of scars during and after the recovery period. From choosing an experienced aesthetic surgeon to diligent post-op scar care, there are several steps you can take to make facelift surgery scars less noticeable over time.

Where Are Typical Facelift Incisions Made?

Naturally, facelift scars will depend on where your surgeon makes incisions during the procedure. An experienced surgeon will have the skill and precision necessary to make carefully placed, minimal incisions in areas of the face that easily disguise any possible scarring. During facelift surgery, incisions are typically made to align with the natural contours of your face so they can be carefully hidden. Plus, modern surgical techniques can keep scarring to a minimum.

The incision locations depend on the type of facelift you’ve chosen:

  • Traditional Facelift: Incisions are placed at the temples to blend in with your hairline and follow natural creases around the ears and lower scalp. Improving your neck’s appearance may involve a small incision under the chin.
  • Mid Facelift: Incisions vary and can be placed within the lower eyelid, inside the mouth, or along the hairline.
  • Combination Procedures: If a forehead lift and/or eyelid surgery is combined with a facelift, incisions can be made along the hairline and within the eyelids to tighten and smooth your forehead and brighten your eyes.

Closing these incisions uses small dissolving sutures. Skin adhesives may also be used to further reduce scarring.

How to Minimize Facelift Scarring

Many patients are eager to enjoy the results of their facelift procedure, but it’s important to remember that healing takes time. While you heal, you can take the following steps to set yourself up for success.

Follow Aftercare Instructions

After facelift surgery, your aesthetic surgeon will provide you with important recovery instructions to enhance the healing process. It’s essential to follow these instructions as closely as possible to facilitate a smooth recovery and promote incision healing. This helps minimize scarring and allows you to achieve your best look.

Take Time to Heal

Rest is an essential part of facelift surgery recovery and can set you up for success in regard to scar management. While your body is resting and healing, there may be some bruising and swelling that will naturally fade over time. As part of your post-op instructions, your surgeon may recommend a compression garment to help minimize swelling and provide support as you heal. Plan to rest after your facelift for at least one week in an elevated position or according to your surgeon’s specific instructions.

After a week or two, light work activities are ok for most patients. More strenuous activities should wait for at least three weeks. Your surgeon can advise you on the best time to begin exercise again based on the specifics of your facelift aftercare plan.

Minimize Sun Exposure

Recovery with less scarring benefits from following your doctor’s instructions. Don’t expose incisions to direct sunlight if possible. Keep them protected to encourage healing and more natural fading.

Your body’s natural healing process will influence your individual recovery time. Expertly selected incision locations also help minimize scarring. Our surgeon’s expertise helps maximize the quality of your facelift results.

Laser Treatments

If there is any lingering scarring that has you feeling dissatisfied or self-conscious, laser treatments can help improve the appearance of scars. AesthetiCare Med Spa offers UltraPulse® and Phoenix Fractional CO2 laser treatments to help patients achieve a smoother, more even skin tone and minimize scarring.
