Is a Breast Lift the Right Breast Surgery for You?
A breast lift is a cosmetic procedure specifically designed to reposition the breast tissue and remove excess skin that causes sagging. This procedure is ideal for patients who are experiencing breast droopiness due to pregnancy, weight fluctuations, or aging. While a breast lift does not add volume to the breasts, it can be combined with a breast augmentation to increase the size and reshape the breasts.

Restore Youthful Curves with a Breast Lift
If you dislike the look of your breasts, whether they sag, droop, or are misshapen due to weight fluctuations, pregnancy and breastfeeding, hormonal changes, or the natural aging process, you have options.
Many women turn to a breast lift to restore their figure to a youthful appearance, but it’s essential to know exactly what a breast lift can–and can’t–do. Below, we will discuss some of the benefits of the breast lift and when to consider customizing your procedure to get the look you want.
What Is a Breast Lift?
A breast lift is a cosmetic procedure with the primary aim of restoring sagging breasts to a youthful position. The benefits of a breast lift include:
- Lifted breasts for a youthful appearance
- Smaller and/or repositioned nipple-areolar complex (nipple and areola)
- Reshaped breast tissue for a more pleasing aesthetic
- Removal of excess skin and breast tissue to eliminate sagging
Who Is a Candidate for a Breast Lift?
As we age, or through the many life changes that affect the body, the breasts can lose their perkiness and youthful appearance. Nipples can droop and point downward, while excess fat and tissue can create an unappealing appearance.
Candidates for a breast lift include:
- Women who are experiencing drooping or sagging breasts, often due to breastfeeding
- Women with large breasts who are experiencing advanced sagging
- Women who have lost significant weight and now have excess skin
If you are interested in a breast lift, you must be in good health, have reasonable expectations for results, and quit smoking. Additionally, a breast lift cannot restore lost volume. A breast lift will not make your breasts larger if you have naturally small breasts or have lost volume due to weight loss or hormonal fluctuations.
How to Customize Your Breast Lift
If you want volume and a lift, combining your breast lift with a breast augmentation is very common. By including breast implants during your breast lift procedure, you can restore lost volume for a plump, rounded, and lifted result.
Discuss your options with your aesthetic surgeon during your consultation to learn how to customize your procedure to suit your needs.
What Is the Breast Lift Procedure?
During a breast lift, your surgeon will utilize one type of incision that best suits your goals, the level of necessary revisions, and your personal preferences.
For women with mild sagging and/or naturally small breasts:
Crescent periareolar technique: the incision is a small crescent shape around the areola and will result in minor visible scarring.
Circumareolar technique: The incision encircles the entire areola and provides a small amount of lift with minimal visible scarring.
For women with larger breasts and moderate to severe ptosis:
Vertical technique: A V-shaped incision is made from the top of the areola down the midline of the breast. While this technique is more invasive than the others and may result in visible scarring, it allows for more revision and lift.
Anchor technique: The incision is made around the edge of the areola, down the breast vertically, and then horizontally across the breast line (where the breast meets the ribs). This is the most invasive option but provides the most substantial and dramatic lift.
Your surgeon will discuss your options during your consultation and create a surgical plan for you. During the procedure, they will make incisions based on your surgical plan, remove excess skin and tissue to reshape the breast, place the implants (if you have combined your procedure with breast augmentation), and reposition the areola.
