Rhinoplasty in Southern California

When the size or shape of the nose is disproportionate to other facial features, the aesthetic balance of the face can be negatively impacted. Nose surgery, also known as rhinoplasty (or, more casually, a nose job), is designed to recontour nasal structures and improve the size or shape of the nose. Rhinoplasty is also used to improve nasal function for increased airflow and easier breathing.

We have AesthetiCare offices in Newport Beach, San Juan Capistrano, Corona, and Encinitas, California, where our highly skilled and experienced plastic surgeons can help you achieve the cosmetic and functional improvements you desire.

If you are considering cosmetic or functional nose surgery, you can depend on our surgeons to make your safety and ideal results our priorities and accomplish these goals by using the latest and most advanced rhinoplasty techniques available.

Our surgeons and staff are committed to providing top-level care from your initial consultation through your recovery.

What Can Rhinoplasty Correct?

A Disproportionate Nose

Whether you feel your nose is too large or too small, cosmetic nose surgery can reduce or increase its size and improve projection.

Sometimes the bridge or slope of a patient’s nose is flatter than they’d like, or the tip or nostrils are too large or wide.

Unlike other plastic surgery procedures, rhinoplasty can reduce some areas of the nose while augmenting others.

An Asymmetrical or Misshapen Nose

You may have been born with an asymmetrical nose or experienced trauma that caused it to change shape.

Rhinoplasty can address issues with the angle between your nose and upper lip, recontour a nose that has healed poorly after an injury, and sculpt the nasal structure you were born with if you feel it detracts from the natural beauty of your face.

Nasal Structure Problems That Affect Breathing

Septoplasty is a type of nose surgery performed to improve nasal function rather than cosmetic appearances.

However, many patients have both issues, and these procedures can be performed in conjunction to correct each of them simultaneously.

Septoplasty, or functional rhinoplasty, treats nasal blockages most often caused by a deviated septum.

Nose Surgery Options Customized for You!

Options and specific techniques best suited to meet your individual needs are determined during your consultation before your rhinoplasty procedure is scheduled.

Nose surgery can last between two and four hours. Before the procedure begins, the treatment area is cleansed, and anesthesia is administered.

Open Rhinoplasty

Open rhinoplasty is an ideal technique for optimal visualization, alteration, and sculpting of the nasal structures.

The main incision needed to perform rhinoplasty is made along the bottom surface of the nose, between the nostrils (the columella).

Incisions are also made inside the nose to make precise and delicate changes to your nasal structures, and these will usually be closed with dissolvable stitches.

After incisions are made within the nostrils and at the base of the nose, the skin is carefully lifted off of the columella to expose the nasal framework and allow for precise adjustments to the cartilage and dorsal hump.

Osteotomy

While not always necessary, an osteotomy can correct a high nasal dorsum with a dorsal hump, close an open roof after removing a dorsal hump, or create a narrower base of the nose.

This rhinoplasty option involves cautiously but intentionally breaking the nasal bones with a device called an osteotome and shifting them upwards to close the roof of the nose.

When osteotomy is performed, an external splint is applied along with nasal airway splints. The bandages and splint help the tissues heal and conform to the new cartilage and bone structure.

Incision Closure

The incisions inside the nose are typically closed using dissolvable stitches, and external incisions are closed with a Steri-Strip™.

Nasal airway splints may be placed within the nostrils to provide support and stabilize the nose as it heals. If osteotomy was performed, a nasal splint is applied as well. The bandages and splint help the tissues heal and conform to the new cartilage and bone structure.

Concerns

Recovery

After your surgery, you will wear internal splints to support your new nasal structure. You may also need an external splint placed over your nose for added support and protection, especially if an osteotomy was performed.

These splints are typically removed within one week during a follow-up appointment. Bruising, swelling, and tenderness are to be expected for the first couple of weeks.

Rest comfortably with your head elevated for two days, and avoid any strenuous activities while you recuperate. Follow your post-operative instructions to prevent an increased risk of complications and help ensure the best outcome.

You should be able to return to work within seven to 10 days after surgery, but there will probably still be some visible bruising that can be covered with makeup.

Your rhinoplasty results will become more noticeable as the swelling subsides and should continue to improve over the following months.

Scars

The external incision required for rhinoplasty fades over time and becomes almost impossible to detect. Rarely, the incision heals poorly and may leave a visible scar or bump, which our surgeons can easily treat.

Cost

The cost of rhinoplasty varies considerably, depending on several factors, but ranges from approximately $5,000 to $10,000. Other cosmetic facial procedures you may want to add will also affect your cost. You will receive an inclusive estimate for your custom rhinoplasty during your consultation, at which time you will also receive information about the financing options we offer.

Pain

Rhinoplasty may be performed under general anesthesia or by using local anesthesia with intravenous sedation to ensure your comfort. However, you will likely experience some discomfort following your surgery, as the anesthetic wears off and for the first week or two of your recovery.

What is the age requirement for nose surgery?

Individuals considering a nose reshaping procedure should be at least 15 years of age, as this procedure should only be performed after the nose has finished developing.

Although it is rare to experience complications after nose surgery, all surgeries come with risks, such as:

  • Abnormal reaction to anesthesia

What results can I expect from my nose surgery?

Any splints, stitches, and bandages are removed five to seven days after your nose surgery.
